It spread over 1000 sq  km in east coast of Odisha . it also a lagoon due to the connection with the Bay of Bengal .it is rich in biodiversity and water of Chilika is rich with lives . Before 1990 it was a just a lake and after the ecological restoration it has become a main attraction of national and international tourists .

NALABANA – BIRD SANCTUARY –

Chilika is a major sites for migratory bird conservation . Not all chilika birds are migrant and some are also permanent residence like the little cormorants .There are different species of birds are found in Chilika and according to their shape and seize they accesses different resources from the lake .

The mixture of salt water and river water gives an unique environment for the unique bio-diversity . here the water is brakish and it is slightly salty in nature . It is the only brakish water lake found in the India .

BENEFITS FROM CHILIKA

Due to the chilika , a huge mass of population are dependent on their livelihood by directly or indirectly . It provide regular income to 1 lakh fisherman from the nearby area of chilika . It also provide job for transporting services and it create a better environment of hotel and lodging industry in odisha .

IPORTANT ISLAND OF CHILIKA

There are numerous small islands are present in chilika lake and some major islands of Chilika are Kalijai , satapada , Nalabana etc .

Total tourist visit per year –

Around 20 lakh people visited every year to chilika and 80% of people are from India are 20% of visiters are international visitors .
