WHAT IS POLLUTION ? AND TYPES OF POLLUTANTS

DEFINITION OF POLLUTION 

Pollution is the undesireable changes in physical,chemical and biological characteristics of air ,water and soil that may harmfully affect life or create a potential of health hazard of any living organisms .

Pollution is the direct or indirect changes in the any component of biosphere that is harmful to the living component and which is undesireable for human being and affect badly to the industrial progress ,cultural and natural assets of general environment of living society.

any substance that causes pollution called pollutant, it include chemical,physical,biological and its derivative component

TYPE OF POLLUTANT

The various pollutant that pollute air water and soil are as follow-

Gases:Oxides of nitrogen,oxides of sulphur ,carbonmonoxide ,halogen(chlorine,bromine and iodine)

Acid droplet:Sulphuuric acid ,Nitric acid

Metals:Mercury,zinc,iron,nickel,lead,cadmium ,tin and chromeum.

Agrochemicals:Pesticides,herbicides,fungicides,nematicides,bacteriacide,widicides ,etc and fertilizer.

Photochemical Oxidant:Photochemical smog,ozone,PAN,Peroxibenzonyl nitrate,aldehyde,ethylin,nitrogen oxide

SOURCES OF POLLUTANT

Waste from Thermal Power Station:

 various type gaseous and solid pollutant and gaseous pollutant are added to environment by thermal power plant .the coal consumption in power plant generate fly ash,sulphur di-oxide and other gases which pollute air.

INDUSTRIAL CHIMNEY WASTE:There are number of industries which are major source for air pollution ,petroleum refinaries are the major source of gaseous pollutants,the major gases are oxides of nitrogen and sulphur.

Agricultural pollutant sources

Pesticides and chemical fertilizers are major sources of agricultural pollutant source.

Sewage

domestic waste like cow dung,rotten vegetable,latrine waste and latrine water are the major pollutants for water pollution.

Radioactive pollutant sources:

In nuclear Power plant huge amount radioactive waste generated and which are hazardous for living organisms.

Automobile:

The toxic automobile exhaust are a source of cosiderable air pollution and the noise from automobiles causes noise pollution.
